Doc Ponds is a chill Stowe hangout offering small and large plates of American eats, from Buffalo wings and burgers to adobo-rubbed chicken, plus 24 rotating taps, 100 bottles, natural wine, thoughtful cocktails and about 1,000 records. The laid-back space has a chalet vibe with artist-decorated skateboards hung on the walls, couches around the fireplace and a spacious patio with picnic tables.
Who is Doc Pond?
In May of 1876 there was a case in court called, "The State of Vermont vs. One Keg Of Lager Beer."
The question at the heart of the case was whether or not people would get intoxicated on this beverage, which was considered low alcohol compared to other drinks. Several defense witnesses were doctors, one of whom testified that the lager contained 4.6 percent alcohol.
Dr. E.A. Pond told the judge and jury that "lager beer was a powerful diuretic and, taken in large amounts, was cathartic, quite nutritious and non-intoxicating. His closing remarks were that a man may drink 15 to 20 glasses, and aside from feeling a little sleepy or stupid, feel no effects from it; it is carried away before the system has time to absorb alcohol enough to intoxicate.'"
The Keg of Lager Beer was found Not Guilty.

Von Trapp Brewery and Bierhall
The Von Trapp Family, the family that inspired The Sound of Music, opened the Von Trapp Brewery and Bierhall in 2015. Inspired by Austrian beer halls, this rustic-chic hangout near Stowe's Trapp Family Lodge offers classic nibbles like bratwurst, schnitzel and spaetzle alongside salads, burgers and grilled plates, all paired with signature house-brewed lagers. High ceilings, sleek wood furniture and oftentimes skis and snowboards enhance the laid-back chalet vibe. Just going for snacks? Pretzels, cheddar cheese soup, and the Austrian style cured sausages and local cheese platter were our favorites when we visited Dec. 2016. Ask to sit in the atrium for amazing views. This brewery + bierhall is open daily from 11:30-9.
